1.
well I'm cold, as I am these days ever since you packed up and left so far away with your thumb held up high by the side of the road with the big trucks rollin' by well you know how I dream that I mean no harm and see the good in everything and that I take anything that I find that fits into my hands, alright alright and I was told you were scared and you lay there shaking, snowflakes in your hair while the day, it grew young and the glow of headlights told you to hold your tongue ...and then I opened my eyes and the long night had passed and I saw in my mind right where you lay your head to rest the morning news black & white on the coffee table and there's that river of meaningless type the one I am unwilling and unable to wrap my head around your filthy jeans, your old boots were found in the mud and the silt of a river six hundred miles south of this town and I was told you were scared and you lay there shaking, snowflakes in your hair
2.
your high walls were never a match for me in spite of these fragile hands I'm just too restless to let them be oh but one of these days the feeling might pass I'll be dreamin' away with my head in the grass oh and one of these days you'll be somewhere out of reach praising the stars for their light you know my heart, it does turn with the seasons and I will keep it caged for all kinds of reasons but there is something in the winds of august that sends those walls come crumbling down upon us and at night I have visions of you wading into water as that pale daylight is fading and in the morning I'll rise slowly with the dew wash my face from these visions of you cause your high walls were never a match for me

Frost 05:31
nothing gold, nothing gold can stay I know it's hard but it's better off this way nothing gold, nothing gold can stay and if this winter ends I'll pack it in and call up all my friends we'll take this town, take this town and turn it inside out but they will strip you of your pride as churchbells ring all thru the night and as you wake in the fading day you will learn that nothing gold can stay I thought I saw, thought I saw your ghost blowing in the wind from down the coast you'd been led, you'd been led astray so I slept outside the house where you were born the broken glass, the curtains burned and torn I lay shiverin', I lay shiverin' on the frosty ground but they will nail you to their cross and weave a crown of thorns and moss and you shall die there, naked and proud as they lay shiverin' on the frosty ground
4.
what if one day you woke and your mother was gone and your father was gone and your brother, and your sister and your cat, and your dog they have run into the ocean because your house it is on fire it is burning to the ground and your father spent eight years in the military forces he worked all day, stayed up all night in those trenches of cockroaches and when the war, it was over he came home to his wife and his family and he said: “what are we gonna do? because they're coming in their planes, with their bombs and with their guns and with their fire and with their hate in their teeth, and with their blood and with their violence they've got knives, they've got fists, they want blood and they've got time.” Well we've got fear, and they've got bravado.
5.
well I ought to grow my hair out long while I'm distracted from these doggone days thought it might pass with age but here I'm stranded they're just words upon some goddamn page but they make me frantic so I hold my breath for just a moment more and I'm exalted I don't think you knew what you were getting into when you met me and you stood there still where the shadows spilled and you let me while by and by, the public eye did forget me they might rip and tear, they might gawk and stare but don't feel like you have to be nice to me all my clothes are torn, all full of holes no one to fix them but I like to leave them all that way to beat the system all that wasted thread, all that naked flesh and all that distance well you have your past, and you have your poisons now it's time that you learned how to listen ...well I always seem to pick the ones who never pick up the telephone.
